Restored beauty - Thirumalai Nayak Palace

Thirumalai Nayak Palace is a 17th century palace built by King Thirumalai Nayak, one of the Madurai Nayak rulers in 1636 AD in the city of Madurai, India. This Palace was built with the help of an Italian Architect and is a classic fusion of Dravidian, Islamic and European styles.

A classic example of the Indo-saracenic style, the piece de resistance of this mahal is its carved dome outsoars without the support of girders or rafters. This mahal has 248 pillars of each 58 feet tall and 5 feet in diameter!!!

The irony about this palace is that it was demolished by his grandson, Chockanatha Nayak, who ruled Madurai from 1662 to 1682 and the valuables like jewels, woodcarvings etc were shifted in order to build his own palace at Trichy (but his dream was never realised).

The building, which can be seen today, was the main Palace where the king lived. The original Palace Complex was four times bigger than the present structure.

Can you recognize the movie scenes shot at this place??
